Prince has been found dead at his recording studio in Minnesota this morning. TMZ broke the story first at about 12:30pm. Multiple sources, including Prince’s own publicist, confirmed the artist’s passing soon after.
Prince had been briefly hospitalized last week, apparently for the flu. He had cancelled several recent concerts for health reasons. There is no word yet on the cause of his death.
Born Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, the multi-award winning musician, singer and actor was known by only his first name. (Except for that brief period when he named himself an unpronounceable symbol.)
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar (for Best Original Song Score for Purple Rain).
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the first year of his eligibility in 2004. Rolling Stone Magazine has ranked Prince at number 27 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
